As part of its broader quest to ‘Connect the World’, Meta has developed a new, AI-based speech-to-speech translation process, which will eventually, ideally, provide more opportunities for people to connect, in real-time, despite language barriers.

Most artificial intelligence translation to date has been focused on written languages because that is the easiest way to train machine learning systems to understand and translate them. Meta Platform Inc.’s artificial intelligence research team at Meta AI said that it has developed a real-time translation system geared toward oral languages, with Hokkien as its first language.

The endeavor is a component of the Universal Speech Translator project by Meta AI, a machine language model that will eventually enable real-time translation of a wide range of spoken and written languages, facilitating communication for all people.
