The executive arm of the European Union, the European Commission, has expressed disapproval of Meta Platforms Inc.’s commercial practices in the classified ad market.

With its Facebook Marketplace service, Meta engages in competitive market for classified ads. The EU launched an antitrust investigation into the service last year to ascertain how it would affect competitors. Officials from the EU have now made the initial determination that Meta’s commercial practices hurt rivals in the classified ad market. Two business practices that were determined to have violated antitrust laws are highlighted in the statement of objections that was sent to Meta.

The provision of online display advertising services on Meta’s platforms does not require this practice, which worries the EU because it is “unjustified, disproportionate, and not necessary.”
