In a collaborative effort with Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism, ProPublica examined the current status of disinformation regarding X. The results of the investigation are published in a joint report.
In line with ProPublica, the study examined more than 200 separate claims that were found to be false by independent fact-checkers. It then looked for posts made by verified accounts that supported these claims, finding 2,000 tweets in total. Altogether, half a billion people had viewed the tweets.
Musk may thus be contributing to the spread of these misleading reports with his changes to the platform’s verification system, which in theory give these accounts’ claims more credibility and reach.
