Etsy eliminates the CMO position as “flat” sales growth leads to 11% employee reduction

Etsy is combining its marketing and operations executive roles into a single position and laying off 225 workers, or about 11% of its entire workforce.

Josh Silverman, the company’s chief executive, made the announcement that sales on the internet marketplace had been “essentially flat” for the previous two years prior to the decision. Ryan Scott, the brand’s long-term chief marketing officer, is departing the organization as part of the reorganization.

During his five years on the platform, Scott’s goal has been to increase audience awareness of the variety of products offered.
