Musk’s transition team reportedly laid off 4,400 of the company’s 5,500 contract employees over the weekend. Local contractors are used by Twitter for a variety of tasks, such as site management and content moderation, but because they are not technically employees, they were excluded from the initial staff cull, which saw Musk fire half of Twitter’s staff last week (before asking some of them to come back). Many of these contractors reportedly had no idea that their contracts would be terminated until they discovered that they no longer had access to Twitter’s systems. It’s unclear what effects the most recent cuts will have, but it appears that as a result, Twitter’s moderation and even general maintenance may start to suffer.
