Meta has confirmed that it is abandoning humans and relying solely on algorithms for Facebook News in all available markets, roughly three years after it first introduced a curated news section for publishers.

In 2019, Meta, then known as Facebook, debuted Facebook News. It began with a small segment of users in the United States before eventually going nationwide and into other countries, starting with the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and France. According to a report in the U.K. trade publication Press Gazette, Meta has decided to end its partnership with Upday, which is owned by Axel Springer and provided the freelancers who powered news curation in the U.K. market, albeit under strict supervision from Meta’s upper management.

As an aside, this happened not long after Press Gazette published a depressing article outlining some of the challenging circumstances the freelancers faced.
