In an effort to stop the Facebook parent from acquiring the maker of virtual reality apps Within Inc., the Biden administration accused Meta Platforms Inc. of trying to buy its way to dominance in the metaverse.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit to halt the transaction in July, claiming that Meta’s acquisition of Within would “tend to create a monopoly” in the market for VR fitness apps. It has requested that the judge issue a preliminary injunction to prevent the planned deal.

Abby Dennis, Federal Trade Commission lawyer, stated in her opening statement that the Within acquisition was a part of Meta’s effort to attract new and more diverse virtual reality users, including users of Within’s well-known subscription-based VR workout app Supernatural.
