Australian Publishers Accuse Facebook of Unfairly Using Their Content

Three Australian lifestyle content publishers claim that after declining to negotiate licencing deals, Facebook utilized their articles on its newly launched news service, and that the country’s strict new internet law failed to protect them.

Australia passed a law this year threatening government intervention if Facebook and Google did not sign deals with some of the country’s largest news companies.

The dispute has brought to light potential flaws in the controversial law. While the majority of Australia’s major media companies have signed deals, some smaller publications claim that the rule has not prevented their material from generating clicks and advertising revenue for Facebook without remuneration.
