Snapchat is discontinuing its Enterprise AR Development Project after only six months

Snap Inc. has announced that it will discontinue the Augmented Reality Services for Business (ARES) platform less than six months after its launch to refocus on other core areas.

With a particular focus on enabling retailers to incorporate Snap’s AR technology into in-store displays, Snap’s ARES platform enables businesses to utilize Snap’s AR tools within their apps and activations. But, according to Bloomberg, the project has turned out to be too expensive to support, so it’s closing down the entire division, costing 170 jobs.

The platform was particularly hard hit by Apple’s iOS 14 update, which caused many Snap users to restrict their data, limiting its expanded ad targeting capacity. Snapchat has faced numerous challenges in expanding its ad business.
