Meta continues to work on messaging interoperability in order to comply with EU laws

Meta has been working on adding support for third-party messaging apps to Messenger, giving users new ways to communicate with each other through the messenger.

Under the new EU Digital Markets Act (D.M.A.), it is effectively being forced to allow third-party apps on its platform. In order to give users more choice and control, the D.M.A. requires all “gatekeeper” platforms—that is, those that “provide an important gateway between businesses and consumers in relation to core platform services”—to make it easier for users to connect with third-party services.

This means that Messenger must enable connections with third-party apps, but it also implies that this requirement will only apply to users within the EU, meaning users outside of Europe may not receive the same level of interoperability.
