Facebook continues to shift away from news content, in preference for entertaining video (ala TikTok), with the announcement that it will be retiring its Instant Articles offering in April next year.

Instant Articles were first introduced in 2015 with the goal of giving publishers a more interesting, quick-loading way to present their articles on Facebook and increase reader engagement within the app. According to Axios, Meta has decided to stop supporting Instant Articles in order to better meet user preferences, which increasingly favor video as the most engaging content type.

Less than 3% of posts with links to news articles are currently visible to users worldwide in Facebook’s News Feed, according to Meta.
