Meta completes the acquisition of Within Unlimited

Meta Platforms Inc. completed its acquisition of virtual reality startup Within Unlimited Inc. after prevailing in a high-profile antitrust suit pertaining to the transaction. Within was reportedly worth USD 400 million after the acquisition.

Previously, Andreessen Horowitz and more than a dozen other investors contributed USD 52.5 million to the Los Angeles-based startup. Supernatural, a well-liked fitness app accessible on Meta’s Oculus line of VR headsets, was created by Within. In October 2021, Meta first disclosed its intentions to acquire the startup. The American Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit in July of last year to halt the deal on antitrust grounds.

The FTC expressed concern that the agreement might lessen competition in the market for VR software. The agency used two main defenses in its lawsuit to argue that the deal shouldn’t go through.
