The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is launching the Knowledge-sharing and Instantiating Norms for DNS and Naming Security (KINDNS) initiative to make the Internet safer and more resilient for all users close. Working with a global community of technical experts, ICANN is developing a clear framework of best practices for Domain Name System (DNS) security.

KINDNS is just one of many ICANN efforts aimed at encouraging broad participation from public and private stakeholders to make the Internet more secure and interoperable.

“With the growth of the Internet becoming an increasingly important part of our daily lives, DNS security has never been more important, ” said John Crain , ICANN senior vice president and chief technology officer best practices for DNS operations, but they are not applied consistently and have at times resulted in significant security breaches affecting the entire Internet.”

To mitigate this problem, ICANN, in collaboration with the technical community, created KINDNS as a mechanism for sharing best practices to improve the security of DNS operations. The result is a simple, effective framework that DNS operators large and small can voluntarily and easily follow. For example, a common best practice within KINDNS is to ensure that domain name servers are geographically and topologically diverse (KINDNS Practice-5 of Authoritative and Recursive servers operators). Another example is requiring operators to enable Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), both through signatures from the authorizing server and through the resolver that validates those signatures. DNSSEC is a technology designed to ensure Internet users achieve their desired online destination by helping prevent some types of attacks (KINDNS Practice-1 of Authoritative and Recursive servers operators ).

Internet service providers, enterprise IT managers, DNS service providers and software developers are invited to adopt the best practices promoted by KINDNS on its website and to promote the program.
