As of this week, X is discontinuing support for NFT profile pictures, a feature that was part of its X Premium package.
NFT profile pictures, which were first introduced in 2022 as a part of its premium “Twitter Blue” service, allowed fans of digital art to display their astronomically expensive JPEGs and provided links to additional information about the artwork through the users’ cryptocurrency wallets. Over the past 12 months, the NFT market has collapsed once again, coinciding with the larger cryptocurrency meltdown, due to ongoing regulatory concerns and doubts about the necessity of the product.
With regard to NFT display, Meta has already reduced its support, and other platforms have distanced themselves from their own digital art initiatives.
