WhatsApp has recently announced its official launch of a new feature that will allow users to instantly search for additional context on the forwarded messages or links. It has added a Google search option in-stream – the option is included within the message stream.
This measure is to combat or slow down the spread of misinformation that is circulated via WhatsApp. It believes providing a smart way to search messages that were being forwarded could help people find the relevant news results or the sources of information.
WhatsApp began testing it in March and now made available for all. As explained by the company, “We’re piloting a simple way to double-check [the content of forwarded] messages by tapping a magnifying glass button in the chat.”
