WhatsApp informs the UK that it would prefer to be blocked than to comply with the Online Safety Bill

WhatsApp, a chat app from Meta Platforms Inc., has stated that it will not compromise end-to-end encryption, which could spell the end of its existence in the U.K. given that the new Online Safety Bill mandates that it be used there.

The head of WhatsApp at Meta, Will Cathcart, stated that he will not compromise the app’s encryption. If he can’t work around this after consulting with British lawmakers, the nation’s most popular chat app will be discontinued. One of the most concerning pieces of legislation on the planet at the moment, according to Cathcart, is the new restrictions the U.K. is enforcing, purportedly to stop child abuse material from being sent over the internet.

The law could mean that either WhatsApp consents to mass surveillance by disabling end-to-end encryption when requested, or Meta could be fined up to 4% of its annual revenue.
