Twitter Inc announced that it would add labels to identify more state-affiliated accounts, including world leaders’ private accounts, to provide users with more context for geopolitical communications.
The move comes as Twitter’s strategy to ban prominent personalities and governments is under investigation after the ban of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s account, and as political firestorms have exploded in Myanmar and India.
Nick Pickles, Twitter’s global public policy director, said in an interview that the company would not label nations where the government conflicted. Furthermore, Twitter will consider the global discussion about the legitimacy of the government when considering if it’s relevant to apply these labels.
