Twitter Modifies Policy on Violent Speech to Include Extra Elements

Twitter has updated its Violent Speech policy with new language that does not appear to add much and does not clarify what the update was intended to address.

Twitter’s new policy states, “Twitter has a zero-tolerance policy for violent speech to ensure the safety of users and prevent the normalization of violent actions. This includes violent threats, the glorification of violence, and wishes for harm”. In addition, Twitter’s revised Violent Speech policy prohibits “inciting others to commit atrocity crimes, such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, or genocide,” which includes the use of coded language (also known as “dog whistles”) to indirectly incite violence.

In addition, the revised policy prohibits threats to “damage civilian homes and shelters or essential infrastructure for daily, civic, or commercial activities.”
