Twitter has reportedly discussed holding an auction for these various @handles as another way to make money for the company, as there are well over a billion unused Twitter handles that need to be freed up.

According to The New York Times, “as its owner, Elon Musk, works to revive the company’s business, Twitter has considered selling user names to generate new revenue. Musk has also outlined plans for Twitter to make more money from other areas, including subscriptions, in order to reduce its reliance on ad spend and diversify its income.

Engineers have discussed running online auctions where people can bid for the user names.
