Following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, Mastodon, an open source alternative, has received some attention. Now, it’s also attracting the attention of independent Twitter app creators.

The creators of well-known Twitter clients, like Aviary and Tweetbot, have recently focused on developing corresponding clients for the expanding Mastodon user base. Independent estimates place Mastodon’s active user base at between 3.3 million and 3.6 million, up from 655,000 in the days immediately following Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

The company is currently developing a subscription-based app for Mastodon users that is very similar to Tweetbot in order to address the “large number of requests” from current users leaving Twitter.
