The US Commerce Department Removes TikTok and WeChat from its Prohibited-01

The US Commerce Department has withdrawn a list of prohibited transactions with WeChat and TikTok that was issued in September as part of the Trump administration’s effort to prevent new US downloads of the Chinese-owned apps.

President Joe Biden retracted a series of Trump-era executive orders earlier this month that tried to prohibit new downloads of Tencent-owned WeChat and TikTok, and requested a Commerce Department assessment of security concerns highlighted by those and other applications.

The Biden directive authorized the Commerce Department to keep an eye on software programs like TikTok that could compromise US national security, and to make suggestions within 120 days on how to protect US data gathered or accessible by foreign adversary-controlled enterprises.
