The United States has condemned Nigeria’s government for banning Twitter and targeting users, including Nigerian broadcasters, and has urged the African country to reverse its decision.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement “Unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy. Freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies.”
Nigerian authorities suspended Twitter indefinitely last week after the social media giant deleted a Tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari threatening to punish regional secessionists.
