On Monday, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications watchdog, gave Google 24 hours to delete banned content or face penalties for “insufficient filtering.”

As per Roskomnadzor, Google failed to comply with its commitment to remove search results that included links to “internet resources with information prohibited in our country.”

Google faces penalties that include fines and a potential slowdown of its online traffic in the country. Moscow has already imposed a punitive slowdown on Twitter for failing to remove banned content. The move comes as Russia attempts to rein in Western tech giants and reinforce internet “sovereignty.”
