An agency within Interpublic Group is advising clients to put a temporary hold on running ads on Twitter, according to Marketing Brew reporter Ryan Barwick. Politico and Ad Age, among other media outlets, covered the story.

A source with direct knowledge of the situation told Politico that Mediabrands, the media agency for the ad-holding group, sent out a letter on Monday advising a pause in activity for the following week as the platform goes through a change in ownership to Elon Musk. Musk has made an effort to reassure advertisers that he will uphold Twitter’s commitments to brand safety, but the executive’s own tweets and an apparent increase in hate speech on the app after the deal’s close are raising red flags.

That presents a significant challenge for a business that depends heavily on advertising and urgently needs to turn things around.
