With the announcement that it will stop providing Facebook News in the UK, France, and Germany starting in December of this year, Meta is moving even further away from news and politics.
The Facebook news tab was first introduced in 2019 with the intention of offering a more reliable source of news content within the app. Approved publishers collaborated with Meta to fill the dedicated news feed. This resulted from the fact that Facebook was seen by many as a crucial source of news and an important facilitator of news and information.
This prompted Meta to step up its efforts to monitor news content and, ideally, weed out shady sources by offering a more curated and reliable news experience.
