Meta Faces a USD 600 million fine in Europe for Potential Violations of Data Protection Laws

In a new legal battle, a group of Spanish media outlets is suing Meta for anti-competitive behavior, claiming that the company has repeatedly broken EU data protection laws to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the local ad market.

The media outlets are suing Meta for USD US600 million in damages. The group, which is made up of 83 media outlets in Spain, asserts that Meta has been collecting user data without permission in violation of the 2018 implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by the European Union.

Meta has been working on different interpretations of the GDPR to comply with it, especially with regard to how users can indicate their consent.
