Meta exploring a decentralized social network to compete with Twitter

Meta is exploring a new decentralized, text-based social network that could rival Elon Musk’s Twitter. According to a report published today by Moneycontrol, the development project is codenamed P92 and will allow users to log into it using their Instagram credentials.

Meta confirmed that it is developing the project, but did not reveal any details about the release timeline. According to the product description, the new network will use ActivityPub, the same technology that powers Twitter alternative Mastodon. ActivityPub is an open, decentralized social networking protocol that allows the creation of individual servers or instances.

They can have their own rules and topics for users to engage in while still connecting to a larger “federated” social network called Fediverse. The product will have Twitter-like features, including clickable links, user bio, username and verification badges.
