LinkedIn has won the protracted legal battle with hiQ Labs, which had been harvesting publicly accessible LinkedIn user data for its own recruitment insights app.

In 2017, after learning that hiQ Labs had been collecting user data from LinkedIn in order to create its own recruitment information service, LinkedIn sought court intervention to cut off hiQ Labs from its service. According to LinkedIn, this violates its user agreement and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts a result.

Since then, the case has gone back and forth and set new standards for data scraping and what can be done legally with online information that is made available to the public.
