Google LLC’s standard Messages application, which comes pre-installed on every Android smartphone, is receiving a significant update nearly two years after it was brought into the 21st century by the addition of support for Rich Communication Services.

The RCS standard, a cutting-edge messaging protocol for SMS text messages that supports richer text features, higher-resolution images and videos, as well as end-to-end encryption, is the foundation upon which Google Messages is built. Google Messages offers a safe and cutting-edge messaging experience through RCS that is comparable to using an app like WhatsApp.

No fewer than 10 new updates are coming to the Messages app over the next few weeks, according to a blog post by Jan Jdrzejowicz, product manager for Messages in the Google Group.
