Google DeepMind introduces a tool to detect and watermark AI-generated images

Google Cloud and Google DeepMind are collaborating to release a watermarking tool for AI-generated images that will enable users to tell whether a piece of art or graphic was created by an AI model. Google DeepMind is Alphabet Inc.’s artificial intelligence research lab.

In a recently released announcement, researchers from DeepMind introduced SynthID, a beta tool that allows users to directly embed a digital “watermark” into an AI-generated image created by Google’s Imagen generative AI model in Vertex AI, the company’s platform for building AI. This enables a small group of users testing the new tool to label their images as artificial intelligence-generated. The system operates using two different AI models.

One model creates a meticulously generated mark that subtly alters the original in a way that is undetectable to the human eye but can be “seen” by another AI model.
