French legislators recently introduced a new law that would require social media brands to moderate offensive content posted by users on their platforms.
Different social and web content providers will have to remove threatening and explicit content within an hour. This would require a rapid response from the social media platforms, or they will be subject to fines up to 4% of their global revenue – as stated under the law.
Nicole Belloubet, Justice Minister of France, believes this will help in reducing hate speech online. She mentioned in a statement, “People will think twice before crossing the red line if they know that there is a high likelihood that they will be held to account.”
