Facebook’s Acquisition of Giphy Raises Competition Concerns

Britain’s competition watchdog has given Facebook and Giphy five working days to address concerns over their merger deal, which could impact digital advertising and the supply of animated images.

The Competition and Markets Authority announced it had completed the first phase of an investigation that had started in January when Facebook was under global regulatory scrutiny over antitrust concerns.

The regulatory authority said, “If Giphy and Facebook remain merged, Giphy could have less incentive to expand its digital advertising. This is particularly concerning given Facebook’s existing market power in display advertising.”
