Facebook to remove some ad targeting functions by January

Facebook Meta announced on Tuesday that the company will cancel some of its detailed identification options on January 19, 2022.

Graham Mudd, vice president of product marketing at Meta, said the forum would eliminate “options related to topics that people may see as critical, such as cause-oriented choices, organizations, or social statistics related to health, race or nationality, political affiliation, religion, or sex. ” Mudd provided examples that include the words “World Diabetes Day,” and “same-sex marriage” as well as topics related to political beliefs, social issues, causes, organizations and statistics.

Facebook has long faced a backlash from human rights organizations and legislators over the methods used by its advertising targeting system. ProPublica reported in 2017 that Facebook allowed advertisers to target nearly 2,300 people who have shown interest in articles such as “Jewish hatred,” “How to burn Jews,” or, “History of ‘why Jews destroy the world.'”
