It appears that the USD 1 account creation fee that X tested charging all users hasn’t had a significant effect on the number of app downloads in the two test regions.
Over the past three months, since launching its USD 1 “Not a Bot” sign-up test in New Zealand, X’s overall app rankings have decreased, but its overall download numbers for the region have remained largely stable.
On October 17, X first revealed its plan to charge USD 1 to all new users who wish to use the app. New account sign-ups in the Philippines and New Zealand must pay a nominal annual fee in order to use the app.
