Google has announced the release of its updated search algorithm. Known as BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), the new update is the biggest alteration to its search algorithm in the last five years. The BERT algorithm focuses on comprehending conversational nuances in a user’s query. According to Google, the latest update will impact about 10% of the US-based queries. The BERT algorithm can already be seen in action on featured snippets around the world.
The previous two algorithm updates were called Google PANDA and Google PENGUIN. Both the updates were important and caused a large number of websites to become penalized due to the use of SEO strategies that were considered ‘spammy’ or unfriendly to users.
