Alphabets Google and Meta Platforms Fined by Russian Court

On Friday, a Moscow court said it was fining Alphabet’s Google 7.2 billion roubles (USD 98 million) for what it said was a repeated failure to remove content Russia considers illegal, the first revenue-based fine of its kind in Russia.

This year, Moscow has increased pressure on big tech in a campaign that critics say is an attempt by the Russian authorities to exert tighter control over the internet, something they say poses a threat to corporate and individual freedom.

In an email Google said that it would study the court ruling before taking any further steps.
