Plintron has successfully implemented VoLTE deployment in Italy over a public cloud, developing an in-house IP Multi-Media Subsystem (IMS) platform based on the 3GPP and IETF defined standards and is now using them. Plintron’s MVNE platform has been upgraded to accommodate the IMS network elements in addition to the existing network elements.

Completed seamlessly in September 2022 with no downtime for subscribers, the project is the first multi-host VoLTE solution in public cloud supporting 9 mobile discounters in Italy.

Subhashree Radhakrishnan, Vice Chair and Co-Founder of Plintron, said: “The IMS implementation in Italy ensures that our wireless discounters and their end customers are VoLTE-enabled while still being able to make voice and data calls.”

Plintron offers a complete IMS solution deployed on the public cloud. It is a tailor-made solution that forwards incoming traffic to the IMS platform only from VoLTE-registered customers. This avoids having to route all incoming calls to the IMS by default, regardless of the customer’s registration status, and does not require additional infrastructure capacity to handle all calls. The solution has been specially developed in conjunction with HLR/HSS and IN, using the MAP and CAP protocol without requiring changes to the mobile operator’s network and the outside world.

This is a true Plintron innovation as mobile operators typically have no choice but to route all incoming calls to the IMS for the entire subscriber base. This leads to wasted capacity in the form of double processing as the IMS has to route the calls from non-VoLTE registered subscribers back to the cellular network for termination. This requires increased capacity to handle the additional traffic due to this double processing and loopback. The Plintron solution ensures that only calls from VoLTE registered subscribers are routed to the IMS, eliminating duplicate processing and saving capacity.

IMS and VoLTE are on Plintron’s roadmap to be expanded to other wireless discounter customers in Europe via the public cloud.
